Invite EVERYONE you know!

Date: Tuesday, January 17th
Time: 5:30pm
Location: Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen St. West

On January 17th-19th, City Council will vote on the 2012 budget. Ford and his buddies want to cut nearly $90 million in services, even though the city has a surplus of at least $140 million. They plan to slash services, hike fares and user fees, and lockout or layoff workers when there is actually enough money to improve life in this city.

Toronto Stop the Cuts has been organizing in neighbourhoods across the city to build powerful resistance against Ford and his cuts. On January 17th, we are all coming together for a Final Budget Showdown - a rally and actions to oppose the cuts and demand an expansion of city services for all! Join us – together we can Stop the Cuts!

Organized by Toronto Stop the Cuts Network which consists of:

We are feeling the weight of these austerity measures being imposed by City Hall on the backs of our community. The cuts will disporporationately affect Etobicoke-North and specifically Rexdale. Our marginalized and racialized youth primarily from the African Diaspora  will continue to be criminalized by the police who just received an 11.5% increase over 4 years

(https://www.citytv.com/toronto/citynews/news/local/article/129193–proposed-contract-would-give-toronto-police-officers-significant-pay-boost ), “The federal government of Canada is set to institute the broadest, most regressive, costly, and ineffective criminal justice policies in this country’s history”(https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/johannes-wheeldon-phd/omnibus-crime-bill_b_1112080.html)

All this while the TTC is reducing service to a majority of routes that serve our community. Of course, our recent immigrants without status, un and under employed, single mothers…will also suffer along with us!

Feeling frustrated from a meeting with Councillor Crisanti, a group of youth pulled together a video. They uploaded a youtube clip challenging Councillor Crisanti to ride the TTC with them for a week. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mXYaNWhFccY&list=FLdiTO8O_mdY6GmW1Lf1lKng&index=5&feature=plpp_video . A couple of them were interviewed by CBC Metro Morning today and they were a front cover story on 24 Hours Toronto https://www.eedition.toronto.24hrs.ca/epaper/viewer.aspx

Join us on Thursday, December 22nd, 2011 Albion Public Library -1515 Albion Road, Toronto, M9V 1B2, ON, 416-394-5170. The gathering is to discuss, plan, strategize and link our struggles with the other places of resistance happening all over the city! (and the world)

Description: Parents! Kids! Childcare Workers! Supporters!

Join us Thursday, December 8th 9:30 am (sharp please!) as we deliver a holiday message to Rob Ford (a.k.a. THE GRINCH WHO STOLE CHILDCARE)

Our kids aren’t gravy!

In the midst of an affordable daycare crisis, Rob Ford and his followers are insisting on slashing childcare services – cutting 2000 desperately-needed subsidies, closing childcare centres, and even considering cuts to quality control inspections and family resource centres. On top of these proposals are a myriad of other cuts, such as those to nutrition programs and affordable housing, that hurt our families and communities.

This is not the kind of city we want to raise our children in.

Don’t let the Grinch shrug his shoulders and blame the province while he pushes through policies that hurt kids and force parents out of work.

Join us, our kids, and our Grinch

Monday, November 28th
9AM
Toronto City Hall

On Monday, November 28th, the 2012 city budget will be released. At this meeting, the Budget Committee will reveal its plans to gut city services and attack public sector workers. Join Stop the Cuts at 9am, at City Hall to confront Ford and his buddies on the Budget Committee. Together we will show them that we are here to fight back every step of the way!

The 2012 Toronto Budget

The budget launch on November 28th kicks off the official budget process. Over the next few months, the city will be making critical decisions that could devastate the lives of Torontonians, especially those living in poverty and without status. The 10% cuts to agencies and departments will gut already inadequate services. Only the Toronto Police will be spared from the cuts – they are getting a budget increase again this year.

The cuts are coming quickly. On November 29th, City Council will vote to sell off 706 social housing buildings in the city at a time when there are 79 000 people on the waiting list for social housing. They will also vote to contract out city cleaning services – a move that will turn good jobs into unsafe, minimum wage labour.

Other major cuts will be wrapped into the 2012 budget, which will be voted on by City Council on January 17th, 18th and 19th.

Winter of Resistance

Stop the Cuts, alongside countless organizations and individuals across this city, is mobilizing for a critical showdown on January 17-19th when City Council will vote on the budget. We will also be working in solidarity with city workers who are facing a lockout by the city in January.

In September, when public outrage forced Ford to delay his cuts, we showed that we have the power to fight Ford. We will continue to fight until we Stop the Cuts!

EXPAND OUR SERVICES! STOP THE CUTS!

Mayor Rob Ford and his supporters at City Hall plan to make serious cuts to all aspects of city services and the workers who provide them. Already every City department (except the Police) has been ordered to cut their 2012 budget by 10%. Community centres are now charging fees for previously free programs like family swim. The TTC has been forced to reduce service frequency on already packed routes. Libraries are planning to reduce hours. Ford is so determined to destroy good, public jobs that as early as January, we could see a lock out of city workers. And that is only a small sample of what’s to come, unless we work together to Stop the Cuts!

Join residents in Davenport-Perth to demand that city programs, services and jobs be saved.

Rob Ford and his cronies are set on destroying all of our public services at a time when we need more! On November 28th, Ford and his supporters on council plan to bring forward a budget that will see devastating cuts to services like libraries, childcare, shelters, programs at community centres, and more!

On November 29th, City Council will also be voting on the proposal to SELL OFF over 1000 units of social housing! This comes at a time when there are 79 000 people on social housing waiting list in Toronto (that list is 10 YEARS LONG!) and thousands of people are on the streets and in the overcrowded and often inadequate shelter system. Ford expects poor and working people to take a cut – while he hands out increases to cops and contracts out our services to corporations.

The Downtown East neighborhood is one of the poorest urban communities in all of Canada. We have seen and felt the affects of poverty for far too long and know all too well what cuts to public services will mean. But this is also a community of amazing resilience and we are fighting back! Join us on Saturday, November 26th as we rally for public services and begin to take back our neighborhood and our city!

We demand:
STOP THE CUTS!
EXPAND SERVICES FOR ALL!
STOP THE HANDOUTS TO COPS and CORPORATIONS!

SERVICES AT RISK & CUTS IN OUR COMMUNITY

  • Sunday Closure of Parliament Street Library and reduced hours during the week
  • Sell-off of over 1000 Toronto Community Housing units, including buildings and houses in this neighborhood
  • Priority Funding Cuts & Users Fees for Adults at 3 local Community Centres: John Innes, Regent Park South and Wellesley Community Centre
  • Slashing city Childcare and cutting funding for subsidies
  • Ongoing attacks on Public Sector Workers, part of a broader move to privatize city services
